The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Municipality of Kavala and the “Akritas” Association of Cypriots of Kavala, present the exhibition “Cyprus, 1974. Memory is the only homeland of the people” at the “Lefteris Athanasiadis” Cultural Centre [Municipal Tobacco Warehouse, Kapnergati Square].

The exhibition preserves the memory of the 1974 Turkish invasion through a large number of exhibits, gathered and made available by numerous institutions and private individuals. Its narrative follows the historical course of events: life before 1974, the coup d’état, the invasion, refugees, those trapped in the occupied areas, prisoners of war, and missing persons. At the same time, the exhibition traces the struggle against the occupation, the reconstruction of Cyprus, efforts to safeguard its cultural heritage and education, as well as the island’s creative expression and its vision for the future.

The exhibition will officially open on Saturday, 19 September 2026, at 7:00 p.m. The opening ceremony will feature a welcome address by Mr Evangelos Chrysos, former Secretary-General of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation and Emeritus Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The exhibition will run until 27 November 2026. Educational programmes will also be held throughout the duration of the exhibition.
